In our reading corner by the basket of books, we pull up two chairs. I have individual reading time with my student. I am completing these activities with my first and third grader. For younger grades, make reading time more fun. My first grader picks a stuffed animal out of another basket, to have a friend for reading time, as she sits next to me. I also pull out a child size ruler, 6 inches long, and she opens up her leveled reader and uses the ruler to stay steady on each line. Using this method, reading has become an anticipated activity.
The best way to strengthen reading skills, is to have your child read their own grade level readers- or only 1 grade level higher if skill level is higher, even if they are more years ahead. They can read especially, advanced books later on in the day.
***This is because, children need repetition in phonics and words to master in drill form. The best books I have found are chapter books, called
Pathway Readers to complete reading drills.
There are also workbooks to accompany readers. We haven't used these as of yet.
