I always complete a mid-year review with our kiddos, and we have had some changes to our curriculum and schooling after this Christmas break. First, my middle daughter is now attending a private, classical, Christian school, and we are very happy with this decision for her benefit. She will learn a lot outdoors also at school-which is a curriculum focus-, which I am very impressed with. Lastly, she is newly enrolled in private piano lessons.
My youngest daughter continues to complete 2nd grade at home with lots of learning manipulatives and a hodgepodge of curriculums for worksheets. She is also reading to me a lot and loves to complete hands-on projects, watch educational videos, and practice computer games and typing online. Currently, she is a bit ahead in math and reading, doing some 3rd grade work. In addition to what she has been completing, I added in the Rod and Staff Science Grade 3 textbook for notebooking and reading material, and we will be adding in TruthQuest History.
Mid Year Review: Grade 6--- 19-20 School Year & A 7th Grade Sneak Peek!!!
Now on to my happy homeschooler, my son! He is adamant about staying at home and completing learning, loving life, the outdoors, and his bit of independence. 6th grade is no easy walk in the park! We have decided to change some curriculum around to benefit his schooling, giving him more of a college-prep and independent way of studying after this Christmas.
We decided to switch to half online school and half traditional schooling for the rest of the year.
He will complete school this way for next year in 7th grade also.
Bible:
Currently, we read from the Bible and he copies down verses and draws about them in a notebook. He is learning to read a lot of scripture this way. The other day, he had to read (entirely) Psalm 145 for me out loud. We continue to use the Bible as a great tool for life and learning. I use this as a read aloud time for him to read a good portion to me. Next year in 7th, we will complete Bob Jones University 7 Bible about the life of Christ.
Time4Learning Online:
Math, Science, English, High School Social Studies, Art
Meets state standards in core subjects and has electives. To foster the core subjects we need support with for his learning, we have chosen to complete Math, Science, and English 6 with Time4Learning Online as a Full-Time Student with these subjects.
It has been wonderful and he literally sits on the computer for 2 1/2 plus hours straight doing these subjects! We plan on keeping him as a full-time student in Math 7, Science 7, English 7, Time 4 Writing, High School Social Studies and Art in this program next year.
Some research about online education:
“Computer education facilitates a variety of skills which are associated with employment in areas of programming and graphic design. Basic skills required in these areas include intelligence, emotional intelligence, hand-eye coordination, mathematical skills, and social competence” (Steinhoff, 2016).
I agree!
Next year supplemental Science on top of online:
Moody Science Classics DVD's Biblical Creation Perspective:

History:
I take a living books approach in teaching history. We finished the audio book (for all my kiddos) "Number the Stars" about the World War II era. We have also extensively covered the pioneer era in Colonial Times, learned about the Great Depression, and the start of the Industrial Revolution.
After this Christmas, we are switching to more a more formal history guide, "TruthQuest History" Starting with Age of Revolution III- You don't have to follow a formal order- At least I'm not! This incorporates reading a lot of chapter books that are recommend for core topics. I am very excited! We can also add in notebooking pages, educational videos, and projects, which I intend to do (with my 2nd grader also).
*This is a guide with spine books to accompany it. There are many TruthQuest Guides for different time eras in history.
We plan on sticking with TruthQuest History next year, in reading lots of chapter books about historical times, completing notebooking activities, and projects.
Spines to Accompany This Guide:
"Drawing upon forty years of study in theology, philosophy, history, sociology and the arts, Dr. Schaeffer contemplates the reasons for modern society's sorry state of affairs and argues for total affirmation of the Bible's morals, values, and meaning." - Amazon
Writing: ( all my children practice writing this way) Currently, we free write practicing the six traits of writing, writing pages and reports, or paragraphs. We have to use a topic sentence, details, and a conclusion sentence for each paragraph.
Next year, my 7th grader will complete Classical Conversations Recommended: The Lost Tools of Writing-
(this comes with online instructional videos)
Independent Reading:
Currently, he is reading "Refugee"
Next Year's Independent Reading List in Grade 7:
Hands-On Learning:
Organization for 7th Grade and for mom!!!
My son will get a student planner to write his subjects in. This will help him to stay organized...
And Mom gets her own Mary Life Planner from A Virtuous Woman.org! I'm excited for this one next year for house management!
"Our culture has conditioned people to value less the domestic arts than productivity outside the home.
And while people love to criticize women who enjoy homemaking, who doesn’t love to come home to the smell of fresh baked bread or a tidy house. Who doesn’t love to open their drawers to find clean socks and underwear on a daily basis?
If you're anything like me, and want to manage your home well and believe that homemaking matters, The Purpose 31 Homemaking Planner is the perfect solution to manage your home and family life. "
