Song of Solomon 8:7Many waters cannot quench love, nor can rivers drown it. If a man tried to buy love with all his wealth, his offer would be utterly scorned.
Obviously we all refer to the Song of Solomon for the love we have towards our spouse. It is a natural, romantic love that is only between your covenant spouse and you for life. I want to take this verse further though. I want to use this verse as a reference to Christ Himself and His love for us and His enemies. That we should follow.
I love this picture. To me it symbolizes loving an enemy, welcoming a lost son back, or holding on to a friend after a battle.
Many waters can't quench love. I have learned this in my life. I don't hold onto grudges. Well, I used too, until Jesus showed me I was walking in Satan's ways by doing so. I have a love for my friends old and new and my enemies. I love everyone I have ever known in my life in a Christlike way. This is Jesus. He is love.
Jesus says love your enemies.
Do we really understand the depth of this?
There is one scene from the movie, "The Two Popes" I think that was what it was called. It resonated with me. A pastor and his missionary friend were close. They went through battles together, until one day the spiritual battle got too hard, was too long, and costed more trauma, physical war, moving ministries, and death around them than the two men could handle. For a time, they thought they were enemies, but they were really brothers in Christ. At the end of the movie, they finally see each other again, after years. Years of suffering PTSD from the trauma around them they couldn't control. Years of agony and tears. Years of anger and bitterness and loss. All stemming from the spiritual war they were in that cost them their friendship and ministry years ago.
Then, they hugged. They didn't use words. There weren't any to come close.
All they did was silently shed a tear and hold on to one another. It was shocking.
That day, Jesus won.
Do we look at our lives like this? Do we love in the hardest of times? Loving someone isn't giving them full access to every area of our lives. It can be a simple prayer. Loving an enemy doesn't mean casting your pearls to pigs, but it does mean praying for them and caring for them.
It would be so easy to throw the stone, kick the leg, or shed that curse, wouldn't it?
And then there is Jesus. He says, give them your hand. Lift them up. Then, you will be like your Father in Heaven. Lift them up, physically or in isolation in a prayer closet.
Love.
I have found freedom in forgiving everyone in my life.
I have found freedom in not holding grudges. It's a poison. Bitterness is of the devil.
1 John 2:9Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.
Many waters can't quench love. The battles of life, the traumas, the wrongs, the sin, the death, nothing can drown love.
The real love that Jesus gives. The love that Jesus gave. The love that made Jesus die for the very worst of sinners. The love that holds their enemies hand to lift them out of the miry clay and put their feet on solid ground.
